Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Orphi collects when you use Orphi on the web or on your phone, why we collect it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it. If something here is unclear, write to us at the address at the end.

Information We Collect

Your account

When you create an account, we collect:

• Your name, your email address, and your phone number if you sign in with it
• Your profile picture, if you add one
• What you tell us when you start: the language you are learning, the languages you already speak, why you are learning, how much you already know, and your interests
• Your time zone and your settings, such as reminders and whether friends can see your activity

If you sign in with Google or Apple, our sign-in service receives your name and email address from them.

Your lessons and study

When you study with Orphi, we keep:

• The documents and notes you add to make a lesson, such as a handout from your class
• The lessons and study cards made from them, and the words you save
• Your answers in study rounds, quick checks and tone practice, and when each card is due again
• Photos you take with the camera in the phone app to learn a word, and the picture Orphi draws from each photo
• The images you make to share your progress

Voice calls

When you talk with Orphi:

• Your voice goes live to Google's Gemini model, so that Orphi can hear you and answer. To guide the call, Gemini also receives what Orphi knows about you that the call needs, such as your level, your memories and the lesson you are practicing. We do not keep a recording of the sound of your calls.
• We keep a written transcript of each call, with what you said and what Orphi said.
• After a call, an AI model reads the transcript to find the words you used and to estimate your level. We keep what it finds.

Your level

Orphi keeps a profile of your level for each language you learn. It holds your level, what you can already say and understand, what you are working on, and a short description of you as a learner. It also keeps a short note on each of the last 200 changes to your level, such as "a call" or "a quick check". A note can quote a sentence you said in a call.

"Say it"

"Say it" draws the shape of your voice next to Orphi's, so you can compare your tones. It works only inside your browser. Your recording never leaves your device, and we keep nothing from it.

Memory

So that Orphi can remember you from one call to the next, we send the transcript of each call to Supermemory, a memory service. Orphi can also save a fact you mention, such as your job or a hobby. Orphi searches these memories during calls.

Friends and leagues

• Your friends on Orphi see your first name and your picture. Unless you turn off "Let friends see my activity" in Settings, they also see your minutes of study, your study days and your streak.
• Someone who opens your invite link sees your first name and your picture.
• If you take part in weekly leagues, other learners can see your name, the language you are learning and your weekly score in the league table.

Assistants you connect

If you connect an assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude to Orphi, we keep its name, the dates it was first and last used, and whether you allowed it to make changes. You must be 18 or older to connect an assistant.

The assistant can read the language you are learning, your level, your lessons and cards, the reviews that are due, your saved words, and a short summary of each of your last five calls. The first time an assistant asks for a call, an AI model writes that summary from the call's transcript, and we store it with the call. The assistant never receives your phone number, your email address, your call transcripts, or anything about your friends.

A new connection can only read. If you turn on Allow changes for an assistant in Settings, it can also save words, record how you did on your cards, turn a text into a lesson, save a note about your learning when you ask it to, and record practice for your streak. You can see and delete these notes in Settings. No assistant can delete anything.

What the assistant reads goes to the company that runs it, under your own account with them, and that company's privacy policy covers it. You can disconnect an assistant at any time in Settings, under Connected assistants. The full details are at What an assistant can see in Orphi.

Information from your phone

• The phone app sends us a notification token, so that we can send you reminders.
• The phone app sends usage events to PostHog, an analytics service: the screens you open, what you tap, and some actions, such as saving a word. These events carry your first name and your phone number.

The web app and this website do not use analytics or advertising cookies. This website loads its fonts from Google, so Google sees your IP address when you visit.

Feedback you send

When you send feedback from the app, we keep your message, the kind of feedback you chose, the page you were on, your browser, the app version, and the call or correction it is about, if any.

Features we removed

Earlier versions of Orphi let you text with Orphi, import your ChatGPT history, record your pronunciation for a score from SpeechSuper, and connect your Google Calendar. We removed these features. The data they collected is still stored: your text messages with Orphi, your imported ChatGPT history, and your pronunciation recordings. If you connected Google Calendar, we still hold the read-only access that Google gave us, but Orphi no longer reads your calendar. You can remove that access at any time in your Google account settings.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• Run Orphi: your account, your lessons, your study cards and your calls
• Pitch lessons and calls at your level, and follow your progress
• Remember what you told Orphi, so that conversations feel natural
• Show your activity to your friends, if you allow it
• Send you reminders, if you turn them on
• Answer your support requests
• Find and fix problems, and improve Orphi
• Comply with legal obligations

Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the companies that help us run Orphi, and only what each one needs:

• Clerk handles sign-in. It holds your name, email address, phone number and profile picture.
• Convex is our database. It holds most of what is described above.
• LiveKit carries the sound and the live text of your calls between you and Orphi.
• Google runs the Gemini model that hears you and answers you in calls.
• OpenRouter passes our requests to AI models from Google and OpenAI. These models read your documents and photos to make lessons, write translations and examples, check them, read your call transcripts to estimate your level, and draw pictures of the objects in your photos.
• Speech services from Google, and from Alibaba Cloud as a backup, turn the words and sentences of your lessons into audio. They receive text, never your voice.
• Supermemory stores your call transcripts and the facts Orphi remembers about you.
• UploadThing stores files: the documents you add, your photos, the images you share, the audio Orphi makes, and the recordings of the old pronunciation feature. A file can be opened by anyone who has its exact web address. The addresses are long and random, and we do not publish them.
• Exa runs web searches when Orphi looks something up during a call. A search can contain words from your conversation.
• PostHog receives the usage events of the phone app.
• Expo and Apple deliver reminders to your phone.
• Discord: when you sign up and when you finish onboarding, our team's private Discord channel gets a message with your name, your email address, and some of your answers, such as the language you are learning and why.
• Discord also receives the feedback you send: our team's private feedback channel gets your message, your first name, and how long ago you signed up.
• Tally runs the waitlist form on this website.
• Assistants you connect, such as ChatGPT or Claude, read and change what is described above.
• Legal requirements: we share data when the law requires it or to protect our rights.

Data Retention

We keep most of your information for as long as you have an account. Some of it is deleted sooner:

• Study rounds and tone practice sessions are deleted after 30 days. Your progress on each card and each tone stays.
• A short record of each call, used to check your level and your answer to "too easy" or "too hard", is deleted after 90 days. For a placement chat, it includes up to three sentences you said.
• Of the notes on changes to your level, only the last 200 for each language are kept.
• When an import fails, its document is deleted after 24 hours. When you delete a lesson, its document and its audio are deleted soon after.
• Feedback messages are kept until you delete your account. The copies in our Discord channel are not deleted with it.

When you delete your account

You can delete your account in Settings, on the web or in the phone app.

• Right away, your account closes. You are signed out, nobody can sign in to it again, and Orphi stops sending you reminders. Your friends no longer see you, and your invite link stops working.
• Within 30 days, we delete everything in it: your profile and what you told us when you started, your lessons and the documents and notes behind them, your saved words and photos, your call transcripts and what Orphi learned from them, your level profile, your study history and streaks, your quick checks and tone practice, your connected assistants, your memories in Supermemory, the files you uploaded and the audio made for your lessons, and the data of the features we removed. We also delete your sign-in account and cancel Orphi's access to your Google account.
• Your friends and leagues: you disappear from your friends' lists, and what you sent them, such as nudges and cheers, is deleted. You leave your current league, which is worked out again without you. If a friend earned a reward because you joined through their invite, they keep it, with nothing left that names you.
• Lessons someone else copied from you stay with them, without your name.

Deletion cannot be undone. Copies in our service providers' backups expire on their own schedules, and we do not restore deleted accounts from them.

Two things are not yet deleted automatically. The pictures you made to share your progress are stored without a link to your account, so we cannot find them on our own. The phone app's usage events in PostHog, our analytics service, are linked to your account, including the events recorded on a device before you signed in there, but we cannot yet delete them from our side automatically. Events from a device where you never signed in are not linked to any account, so we cannot find them. To have either deleted, write to us and we will delete them.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

• Access the personal data we hold about you
• Correct data that is wrong
• Delete your data
• Object to some uses of your data
• Receive a copy of your data in a format you can reuse

To use any of these rights, write to us. In Settings, you can also delete your account, change your name and picture, and choose what your friends see.

Children's Privacy

Orphi is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected such information, please contact us immediately.

Security

Other learners cannot see your lessons, your calls or your progress, apart from what friends and leagues show as described above. A few people on the Orphi team can see account details, such as your name, your email address, your phone number and the titles of your lessons, to help you and to fix problems. We protect your data with technical and organizational measures. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
